Dwayne Jason Varela

Dwayne Varela, born July 14, 1979, passed away on September 4, 2026. Dwayne was a remarkable man whose life touched so many people in ways both big and small.

Dwayne proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1997 to 2004, achieving the rank of Sergeant, and he continued his service in the Reserves. His commitment to serving others was a meaningful part of who he was. After his military service, Dwayne continued to challenge himself and pursue his goals, earning his Master’s degree and later building a career at Intel. He was an incredibly intelligent man who was always curious, always learning, and never afraid to take on something new.

Above all, Dwayne was a father, brother, and friend. He was the incredibly proud father of his beautiful daughter, Daphne, and she was a source of tremendous love and pride in his life. He was a loving brother to Damon and a beloved friend—and chosen brother—to countless people who were fortunate enough to have him in their lives.

Dwayne faced personal struggles throughout his life, but those struggles never defined the goodness in his heart. He was kind, loving, and genuinely fun-loving. He had a way of bringing laughter and joy into a room, often without even trying. And if you knew Dwayne, you probably experienced his enthusiasm for teaching people how to Dougie—whether you asked for the lesson or not. Those moments of laughter and silliness are the memories so many will carry with them.

Dwayne had many interests that reflected his curious and unique personality. He loved collecting gadgets and plants, and he took great joy in his hobbies. He also deeply loved his dogs, Bowser, Louie, and Ellie. They were cherished companions and an important part of his life, and they will miss him dearly.

Even in the end, Dwayne continued to think of others. Through his final act of organ and tissue donation, he gave the gift of life and the possibility of a better future to others. It is a profound final reflection of the compassion and generosity that lived within him.

Dwayne's life may have been far too short, but it was filled with service, love, friendship, laughter, and moments that will never be forgotten. The people who loved him will carry his memory forward—not only remembering the difficult moments, but celebrating the man beneath them: a smart, loving, generous, funny, and deeply caring person who made this world a little brighter simply by being in it.

He is survived by his daughter Daphne, his brother Damon, and his stepfather Gustavo. He was preceded in death by his mother Theresa and his brother David.

A Graveside Service will be held on September 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 E Pinnacle Peak Road, Phoenix, AZ, 85024.
